Wine Profile
Ratings
Wine Enthusiast 94 "The nose of this wine wafts with aromas of cassis, cocoa powder and fresh-ground coffee. There’s a good deal of rich tan nin on the plum- and cocoa-flavored palate, but a lovely streak of acid balances the finish nicely. Get a coffee-crusted ribeye and go to town!"
Vineyard Notes
Loam embodies our pursuit of the perfect expression of a wine. Great wine originates in the vineyard, and great vineyards originate in the soil. Most world-renown viticultural regions consist of loam soils and Sonoma County is no exception. Within the loam family of soils is an array of classifications, or “series,” identified and cataloged by four distinctive features: composition, depth, slope, and geographic location. Our family grows Cabernet in 23 of the distinct Loam soil types, yet I felt that only three were worthy of the “Grand Cru” distinction.
Winemaker Notes
The 2021 Loam Cabernet Sauvignon is our proprietary blend of grapes sourced from vineyards planted in Positas, Suther, and Clough soils. It is composed of the best vineyards, grown in the best soil, from the best appellations. Perfectly structured, Loam balances the brightness and focused tannins of hillside fruit with the dense, rich characteristics of fruit grown in the ancient riverbed and valley floor soils. Despite the drier growing season, the ripening period that falls between mid-August to late October was nearly flawless. Long warm Fall days meant picking decisions could be scheduled in the absence of haste. Grapes patiently hung on the vines, waiting to be harvested at their ultimate balance of flavor, freshness, and intensity. Our 2021 Loam exudes aromas of sweet red cherry, shavings of milk chocolate, dried coastal underbrush, and intricately woven dried herbs. Great freshness with silky tannins make this energetic Cabernet Sauvignon quite approachable for such a young wine. It still, however, carries the hallmark length and finesse one would expect from our single soil series Cabernets. This beautiful Cabernet Sauvignon will age gracefully for 10+ years. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.
